GuateStar activities help the indigenous population of Guatemala with educational and community projects, primarily through construction, the use of technology, biblical values, training and community outreach.
GuateStar works with schools to improve education in rural communities. Often children must begin working at very young ages — some no older than five — to help provide for the family. There is limited opportunity, especially for women.
The lack of education keeps families trapped in a cycle of multi-generational poverty.
Poverty in Guatemala, especially in indigenous rural areas such as the Highlands, ranks among the highest in Latin America. Guatemala placed 133 of 187 countries (and last in Latin America) on the United Nations Human Development Index. Forty percent of the population lives on less than $1.50 a day.
Adequate medical care is lacking because many cannot afford the cost of basic health care. Also, the public health-care system in this area is hindered by low quality equipment and a shortage of staff.
The goal of the GuateStar ministry is to provide education, technology, medical aid, construction and community outreach programs combined with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to give assistance and hope to those who would not otherwise be helped.
GuateStar emphasizes learning through technology. Much of this goal is accomplished through Club Extra, a program that provides after school learning camps for students and children in the surrounding communities. Club Extra focuses on promoting the love of learning using technology to augment comprehension in English, music and Bible. GuateStar believes that technology is a magnet to help students develop a love for learning.
